Remember That You Can Dispose Of Sharps At WLSSD For Free

For my other gig, I am involved in a decent amount of regulated and hazardous waste disposal.  One of the things that we see quite often are objects like needles and medical sharps disposed of in normal garbage cans or just pitched into dumpsters so they get mixed in with general waste.  Not only is this not safe, it’s also illegal to do within Duluth, Cloquet, and surrounding communities.

The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District, of WLSSD, offers free disposal for residents at their Household Hazardous Waste facility in Duluth.  You can take any sharps and needles you have and place them in a rigid plastic container with a screw on lid.  Items like old laundry detergent jugs are great for this, as they have more sidewall strength than something like a milk jug or pop bottle.

You can then label the container “Household Medical Sharps”, and there are even free stickers for this available at WLSSD.  Once the container is full or you have all that you need to dispose of, it’s suggested to use some kind of heavy duty tape to seal the lid.  You can then drop it off at the WLSSD Household Hazardous Waste facility during their hours of operation.
